Wet years, dry years, El Nino, La Nina, below normal rainfall, above normal rainfall. During the last decade residents of the Bay Area have become weather watchers and rightly so. We live in one of the most beautiful places on earth but the beauty of where we live can be highly effected by fluctuations in rainfall. Conservation becomes second nature when individuals want to protect our precious natural resource of water.

ACWD has had an aggressive conservation program since 1977. Since California's water supply will always be a concern, ACWD has included conservation as a significant component of its comprehensive Integrated Resource Plan (IRP). This plan takes into consideration all factors of water supply as related to the growth and development of the ACWD service area. Along with new supply side alternatives, conservation plays a large part in the water supply picture under the IRP. It is the hope of the District that under this plan, water supplies will be managed in such a way that will result in no more than a 10% shortage in severely dry years.

In addition to our own IRP, ACWD is one of the signatories of a Memorandum of Understanding between urban water districts from throughout the State of California and a member of the California Urban Water Conservation Council (CUWCC). Through the CUWCC, ACWD joins a statewide partnership of urban water agencies, public interest organizations and private entities to better plan and manage California's water resources.
